As you may know, it is the year 2019, and Runescape is still a popular game. It is simply amazing and a testament to the game’s design that it has lasted this long. Runescape has been around in some form since 2001. As with most games in the RPG/MMORPG genre these days, there are free-to-play and paid options. The purpose of this guide is to show new, free-to-play players how to make money in Runescape.
Runescape was one of those games that I always heard about, but never tried up until about 6 months ago. I was blown away that a game not up to the visual standards of other games, could still have a thriving population.
As with most MMORPGs, having wealth can makes things much easier, and Runescape is no different. Playing around with the economy in MMORPGs is one thing I love to do. Even though severe limitations are placed on free-to-play accounts, there are still ways for free player to make money in Runescape.
One of my favorite places to make gold is around the Taverley area. There are multiple avenues to generate income for new players in this location. In addition, there are a couple of banks to offload items if your inventory gets full.
My favorite thing to do in this area is kill chickens. There is a small area in eastern Taverley that has several chickens running around. Just kill and collect the raw chicken and feathers. I don’t really pick up the bones. You already have a small inventory and they usually don’t sell for a lot. In five minutes, I was able to collect 105 feathers and 14 raw chickens. I listed these on The Grand Exchange and this turned into 1155 gold for the feathers and 10892 for the raw chicken. That is a profit of 12,047 gold for a total of five minutes.
Cows are another great way to make money in Runescape as a new player. In western Taverley, there is a pen full of cows. This is possibly even better than chickens because the cows are more concentrated. You can collect cowhide, raw beef, and bones. Again, I don’t bother with the bones. In my test, I collected 13 cowhide and 13 raw beef in three minutes. These were sold for a total of 15,106 gold, 4433 for the cowhide and 10673 for the raw beef.
As you can see, the cows outproduced the chickens by quite a large margin. I still like chickens as the price for raw chicken can go quite high and sell a little better than raw beef.
Tree cutting is another way to make gold in Runescape. Trees are everywhere and you shouldn’t have trouble finding them. I was able to collect 27 logs in five minutes. These were sold on The Grand Exchange for a total of 5859 gold. As you can see, logs are not near as profitable as cows and chickens. Although, if you want to level up tree cutting, there is still profit to be made.
Arrows are another great money maker, or to be more specific, headless arrows. These are great because you can start making the shafts and fletching the shafts without any skill. You will also start leveling the skills to make higher grade items. I collected 27 logs in 5 minutes and made 405 arrow shafts. For the feathers, I purchased 405 feathers from The Grand Exchange for 4050 gold. If you are lacking money, you can kill chickens for the feathers.
Using the 405 feathers, I fletched 405 headless arrows. These were sold for 14,985 gold. When you take away the 4050 spent on the feathers, this was a 10,935 gold profit. Not too bad.
Tips to Make Money in Runscape
- When selecting an area to farm, try to get as close to a bank as possible. When your inventory gets full, there is a shorter travel distance to empty it and get back to farming.
- Clean your inventory out before you start. It will fill up quick.
- When you’re selling on The Grand Exchange, Runscape will give you a selling price. I will usually add more to it and wait a few minutes to see if it will sell for a higher price. If not, I will lower it.
- If you are not in a rush for money, put a higher price on it. You will be surprised when it sells for that in a few hours or when you log in the next day.
As you can see, it is not hard to make money in Runescape, even as a free-to-play player. Yes, paying players have a lot more options but free players are not left out. There are many ways to make much more gold, but I wanted to focus on the free-to-play aspect and new players.
I plan on doing another article on using just The Grand Exchange for profit. As of right now, Runescape.com is showing 160,676 players online. That is very impressive for an 18-year-old game!
