Blade and Soul is a fairly new free MMORPG that was released in January 2016 by NCSOFT. The combat is slightly different from traditional MMORPGs in that it is based more on martial arts. This post goes over the basics of installing and character creation in Blade and Soul.
The game is free and the download is available at the Blade and Soul website. The download if fairly large and it took me around 1.5 hours on broadband to completely download and start playing. This is something you may want to take into consideration if you want to start playing immediately. There is an option to start playing, seemed to be around an hour, after you download a certain number of files, but I waited until it was completely downloaded. Once it is downloaded, installing is like any other program and I did not run into any problems.
Starting the Game
The game requires you to have an NCSOFT account. You will need to log in with your account to start the game. In what seems to be a practice that is catching on in games now, there is 2-factor authentication. You will need to set up a 6-digit PIN and this will be required to start the game. Hopefully this practice has cut down on accounts getting hacked and players losing everything.
The game does use the nProtect GameGuard system to prevent cheating. For most, this should not cause any problems. I did have an issue with GameGuard in Asta and tracked it down to incompatibility with the ZoneAlarm firewall. I removed ZoneAlarm and went with the built-in Windows firewall and have had no other problems.
Character Creation in Blade and Soul
Upon starting the game and logging in, you will enter the starting character screen. Here you can choose the character you would like to play or create a new character. You are allowed 3 characters initially with the option to purchase additional slots if you would like more.
Character creation in Blade and Soul is done very well. The first screen you see will have the options for race, class, and gender.
- Blade Master
- Force Master
- Kung Fu Master
- Soul Fighter
On the left side of this initial screen, you are given a video on the play style, difficulty, strengths, and a description of the class you have selected. There is also a summary of your chosen race.
After you have selected your race, class, and gender, the next screen is where you can customize you new character. Character customization is very robust. There is a handy preset option to quickly customize your character, and then change what you do not like. There are also tabs for facial decorations, face customization, and body customization. You can change pretty much any aspect of your character including brow type, eye depth, and hand size just to name a few. There are so many customization options, it prevents mentioning them all in one article.
On the left side of the screen, there are different options of how to preview the character you are creating. These include background, lighting, pose, and outfit. There is also a handy feature that lets you compare the body type of the different races. The last option on the left is where you can change the voice with quite a few different voice options.
After you have your character set up and customized, the next screen is where you will select your server. There are many servers to choose from and it might be helpful to do some research on the servers before selecting as some might have a majority of people from another country. Some of the servers will have “new” beside them and could be an option if you like playing on a brand new server that might not have the population of more established servers.
All that is left is to name your character and take off into the Blade and Soul world. The game is moderately popular with NCSOFT boasting millions of players. Impressive since it just launched a few months ago. This game looks very interesting and I will be posting different aspects of the game as I get to them. I hope this post was helpful describing installing and character creation in Blade and Soul. Enjoy!
